Cable Cars – What you need to know

San Francisco Cable Cars are not merely one of San Francisco Top-Icons, and most visited attractions, they are also the world’s last cable cars still manually operated. The cable cars are ridden by more than 7 million passengers every year, most of whom are tourists. The Cable Cars are also included in the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1873, the Clay Street Hill Railroad was the first cable car that began to regularly serve the city of San Francisco; it took quite a few unsuccessful experiments before they were able to master the usage of cables and grip cars. Today, we have 3 lines:

The Powell-Hyde (Line 60) connecting the Powell / Market Street Terminal to the Beach Terminal adjacent to the San Francisco Maritime Museum. The Powell-Mason (Line 59) connecting Powell Street to the Fisherman’s Wharf area; this line is largely used by tourists. The California Street (Line 61) running along California Street from Van Ness to the Embarcadero, this is the line mostly used by commuters, especially on weekdays.

How much does a Cable Car ride cost?

A single ride cost $ 7.00, but there are 1-day, 3-day, 7-day, and Monthly Passes available for unlimited rides, plus the City-PASS includes the extremely popular 7-Day Pass.

MUNI System & Historic Cable-Car considered one of the most historic attractions in San Francisco, that should not be missed! San Francisco transportation system is one of the oldest in the country; the first cable car was tested in 1872, was designed by Andrew Smith Halide, a British gentleman. After witnessing a terrible accident involving a horse-carriage in one of the dangerous hills of San Francisco, he decided to create a system of towing with wire-ropes.

The MUNI system, today the official transportation (MTA) of San Francisco, operates with historic streetcars, cable cars, light rail vehicles, buses and electric trolley coaches and they will transport you throughout the entire city. There is no better way to experience and enjoy the beautiful hills of San Francisco!

I’m the biggest fan of Fall activities, but haven’t had a chance to do anything beyond Apple Picking in NJ. I decided to take a last minute 2 day trip with a friend in Hudson Valley, but didn’t know where to start [...] Thankfully I was able to use New York Welcome to do the hard work for us [...]

Irene was a FANTASTIC tour guide! She was so knowledgeable about the area and was so patient with all our questions. We stopped to use the bathroom and we got coffee halfway through, she was so kind! It was a pleasure learning about Brooklyn from you!
