LET'S FALL IN LOVE with fall colors in the U.S.
As the crisp autumn air sets in, we can't help but think of cozy sweaters, pumpkin-inspired dishes, apple picking, and the vibrant fall foliage. Those
traveling across the U.S. to witness this fall spectacle often find it tricky to predict the exact moment nature puts on its show.
However, thanks to
SmokyMountains.com, there’s a solution. Utilizing weather data, rainfall analysis, historical trends, user reports, and knowledge of local flora, they've crafted an annual fall forecast map. The 2023 edition is now available, offering an unparalleled guide to experiencing
the U.S. autumn at its finest.
This
interactive map provides users with a timeline slider, giving a dynamic view of when peak foliage occurs across the country—a natural event that presents some of the most breathtaking sights in the States.
.
David Angotti, the mastermind behind the map, elucidated its significance, stating, “This tool is akin to weekend weather forecasts. With a unique blend of historical data and weather predictions, we can offer
incredibly accurate forecasts by late August. Our goal is to present a fun, updated, and informative map for all U.S. fall lovers.”
According to the forecast, fall foliage will hit its zenith in the northern parts of
New York state by late September, retaining its vibrancy until roughly October 7th. Shifting further south to New York City, peak colors are expected between October 9th and 13th.
This timeline is mirrored in other East Coast states like
Vermont, where the foliage will be in its prime around October 9th-13th (with slight variations in southern areas). Similarly,
Maine's autumn colors will peak around the same time.
Predictions for the West Coast show a similar trend, with
Washington state's fall hues peaking between October 9th and 13th.
For those keen on extending their fall foliage chase,
heading south to North Carolina might be ideal. Here, the leaves will be at their most radiant a tad later, from approximately October 23rd to 30th.
SmokyMountains.com also encourages users to
enhance the map's accuracy by submitting photos. Foliage aficionados are free to share their best snapshots of American autumn, much like they would on major social platforms.
EDITOR'S NOTE: If you're keen on staying in Historic Inns or Bed and Breakfasts in destinations such as Vermont and Massachusetts, it's wise to book ahead. These spots tend to fill up, especially over the weekends..
